Jayne Catherine Hanchett, 90, of Moriah Center passed away Oct. 2, 2017 in Port Henry, NY in the loving care of her family.
Jayne was born in Port Henry, NY on October 15, 1926, the daughter of Stanley and Josephine Gilbo. She attended Sherman Park Catholic School and then attended and graduated from Port Henry High School.
She was a stay at home Mom raising 7 children. She then went to work as a caregiver for the elderly, worked for Headstart as a teacher’s aide and later for Moriah Central School as a lunchroom monitor. Jayne enjoyed family picnics at the beach and BBQ’s at her home. She was a great cook and was famous for her pizza and raspberry cream pie. She was in the bowling league and loved to travel with bus groups to casinos. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends. She loved animals, cheering her kids and grandkids on in sports and most of all chocolate.
Jayne is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Rufus (Jap) Hanchett, her parents, her son Douglas, in laws Rufus and Bertha Hanchett, brothers, Walt (Mary), Sonny (Betty), Oakley (Betty) and Dickie (Florence)Gilbo, her sisters, Dorothy (Gerry) Shpur, Terry (Red) Baker, Judy (Ben) Snow, brother in law, Jay Hanchett, sisters in law, Dorothy (Dot) French, Jane Chappell, Betty Vargo and Beaulah Antone.
Jayne is survived by her sons John (Linda) of Moriah, Ward (Stephanie) of Port Henry, Tom (Karen) of Moriah, Edward (Kathleen) of Queensbury, Jeff (Ginny) of Fairport and a daughter Tina (Alan) Gardner of Essex, brother Joe (Mary) Gilbo of Port Henry. She is also survived by her grandchildren Bill, John, Michael, Jennifer, Becki, Ward (Boomer), Kenny, Mary Kate, Lydia, Isabelle, Emily, Stephanie, Shelby, and her great grandchildren Owen, Evan, Addison, Porter, Carter, Chase, and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Jayne’s home care aides Carla, Vicky and most of all Chrissy Baker.

Calling hour will be held on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017 from 4-7 pm at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 6 at 11:00 am at St. Patrick’s Church in Port Henry. Burial will follow in St. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Moriah.
