Richard Francis Sherman, 85, born May 6th 1938, entered the gates of Heaven this Wednesday, November 15th. At his home with his wife Eleanor Sherman and his family by his side.
Richard, ‘Dick’, was a strong man of character, dignity, and respect. Known for his wild sense of humor, deep loyalty, hard work and the highest level of reverence for his larger than life family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and horse racing with his friends and family.
One could say, Richard lived a thousand lives in one. Filled with adventure, compassion and so much love. As a young man, he served in the National Guard and then the US Airforce, where he refueled planes in the air. He came back home and continued his love for the outdoors finding himself working deep underground in the coal mines where he said he felt “alive”. He went on to start Sherman Trucking, Construction, Paving and Seal Coating company 55 years ago that his children have since kept going. He also served as the Moriah Highway Superintendent as well as built homes for all of his children on the same street he lived on. He was a simple man that never took a moment for granted.
Richard, Dick, papa, poppy, pop, daddy.
He lived a full life and did everything he ever set out to do in this lifetime. There was truly nothing this man couldn't or didn’t do. He traveled the world and back again. He said this land, the Adirondack mountains, was the most beautiful place in the world. So here is where he settled with his beautiful bride, the love of his life, where they had 7 children together. They were married 66 years, this October 26th. Richard is survived by his wife, Eleanor and 5 children (Kim Sherman, Richard II and Tammy Sherman, Susan and Gary Sadowski, Jody Sherman and Nile Granger, and Craig and Tracy Sherman), 13 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Kelly and son Bobby.
Services will be held this Sunday, November 19th from 5-7pm at Harland’s Funeral Home and Saint Patrick’s Church on Monday, November 20th at 10am. Following the burial will be a celebration of his life in his home at 35 Mountain Spring Road in Mineville.
