Obituary

On October 4th, 2022 Peter A. Hanson, 81 of Moriah New York, passed away suddenly at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital surrounded by his loving wife and family. Pete Hanson was born on July 30th, 1941 to parents Raymond and May (Putnam) Hanson.

In 1963, Pete enlisted in the United States Navy. During his time in the navy he worked on aircraft carriers. He was an airplane mechanic and helped prepare jets for take off and landing on deck. He proudly served three tours in Vietnam where he earned many medals and accomodations. After his time in Vietnam he was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia until his honorable discharge in 1969.  After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Pete returned home to Port Henry where he began working in the apple orchards. During his time at the orchards, Pete developed a love for plants and gardening. Over the years he worked at many orchards in New York and Vermont.

In later years, Pete began working for himself as a carpenter. He enjoyed woodworking and could often be found tinkering around in his garage. He enjoyed bowling, and bowled in a mixed league with his wife for many years. Pete was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing (especially trout fishing), and gardening. He always had a beautiful garden that he enjoyed tending to. Pete enjoyed being on Lake Champlain no matter what time of year it was. Over the years he built up a very successful ice fishing business. He built his own shanties and rented them out each winter. His business attracted people from all over the United States, with many return customers.

Pete loved spending time with his lifelong friend William (Red) McDonough. In high school, they played football together and loved to reminisce about their glory days. Over the years they spent many hours together playing cards, going fishing, and hunting. Pete was also fond of Christa Carter, a very special family friend. He enjoyed her daily visits, and always told her that she was a “good girl”. Pete always had a soft spot for the ladies!

Pete is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kay (Carpenter) Hanson, his daughter Tammy (Keast) Malbon and her husband Todd Malbon of Mineville, their children Kaycee Kolodzey and Todd R. Malbon; his son Jason Hanson and his wife Kristin (Kourofsky) Hanson of Peru, their children Jack and Alexis Hanson; a sister Sally (Hanson) Moses of Port Henry; a brother Raymond Hanson and his partner Paula of Port Henry; a sister June (Hanson) Chilton of Florida; a sister Linda (Hanson) Witherbee of Port Henry; his beloved cat Gizmo; and many nieces and nephews.
