Percy Fleming Obituary

MORIAH - Percy O. Fleming, 83, of Moriah passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at his son’s home in New Russia surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 31, 1941 in Moriah, NY to Sheldon and Frances Fleming, one of ten children.

Percy was an extremely hard worker. Under the tough exterior there was a kind, gentle soul. Anyone who was a part of the original Frontier Town knows that he was a staple there for many years, having had a hand in nearly every facet of the business. When the original owners sold, he moved on to Elk Lake Lodge where he worked in maintenance for many years. He later became manager of the Lodge and its 12,000 acres with his wife, Janet, until their retirement in 2003. He always said that if it could be done, we’d try it, and humbly commented that he was lucky enough to become a man of many trades, but a master of none.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. In later years, after retirement, he loved working with his Belgian draft horse, bringing back fond memories of his years at Frontier Town. Retirement also brought back the old Martin acoustic guitar that he played so many years before with friends Dick Cory and the late Jim Pepper. It got a great workout at many Saturday night music jams over his final years with his old friend Don McGinness, Don’s wife Pam, Rob Demuro, and his son Dean. Fun was had by all while the house was always filled with friendly listening and dancing patrons.

Percy was predeceased by his parents, wife Janet of 65 years less than eight weeks earlier, brother Gary (Linda) Fleming, sisters Betty (Warren) Pattison, Dorothy (John) Kordziel, Audrey Young, and brother-in-laws John Kordziel, Warren Pattison, George Evens, and Lloyd Laslow.

He is survived by his sons Tracy Fleming (Lisa) of Angier NC and Dean Fleming (Korri) of New Russia NY, grandchildren, Tara St. Claire (Scott) of Angier NC and Justin Fleming (Aimee) of Columbia Heights, MN, a great grandchild Elliott, siblings Mary Ann Laslow, Judy (Napoleon) Marcotte, Diana (Emmett) Hargett, Sally (George) Evens, Randy (Juanita) Fleming, sister-in-law Linda Fleming, a special niece Diane Bauer, and numerous friends and family members.

The family would like to thank the staff at Elizabethtown Community Hospital and Clinic, as well as High Peaks Hospice for their caring and compassion during his time of need. Special thanks to Rob Demuro and Ashley Rodriguez for their caring, love, and compassion. We know Percy wasn’t always the easiest patient, but he, too, surely appreciated your kindness and assistance.

Percy will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He certainly had his own way that made him special. As per his request, there will be no calling hours or services. Donations may be made to the Moriah Ambulance Squad or High Peaks Hospice in his name. Rest easy, Old Timer, until we meet again. Love you always.
