Madeline Huchro Obituary

Madeline Huchro passed away peacefully on Sunday May 23, 2021, just 1 day shy of her 91st birthday.  She was surrounded by her husband, daughter, and son.

Madeline was born in Catskill, NY, the daughter of Walter and Madeline Weitlauf.  As a child she always wanted to be a teacher.  Upon graduation from Catskill High School, she attended NYS College for Teachers in Albany, NY with a degree in Math and French.  After graduating from Albany Teachers College, Madeline accepted a position at Westport Central School in Westport, NY teaching high school mathematics.  Madeline took a break from teaching and stayed home when her children were small, but eventually returned to the classroom in Westport as the high school French teacher until her retirement.  One of her pleasures was to see former students and to reminisce about the classroom happenings.

In 1955, Madeline met Walter Huchro, who was a pharmacist in Westport.  The couple was married in 1957 at St. Phillip Neri church with a reception following at the Westport Inn.  They purchased Mount Pleasant Estate, a tourist home and after renovations made it their home for 30 years.

Both Madeline and Wally enjoyed entertaining and for many years held holiday parties, hosted the wedding reception of their daughter (with an Oompah band), held supper clubs, and bridge parties.  They enjoyed summers in Westport on their boat the Mimakawa and frequently were joined by friends.

In the 1980s, having an empty nest, Madeline and Wally build a retirement home on First Lane in Westport and also purchased a home in Florida in the retirement community of Kings Lake in Debary, Fl.  For 26 years they spent their winters in Florida and the warm summer months in Westport, enjoying the best of both worlds.

When home during the summers, Madeline hosted a weekly bridge game at her home for friends in the Westport area.  At the end of each summer a donation was made to a donation to a charitable organization.  Madeline also loved to knit, do cross stitch projects and solve Thomas Kincaid puzzles.  Both Madeline and Wally enjoyed watching their granddaughters play sports where they were their biggest cheerleaders.

Madeline and Wally were proud to say they were married for over 63 years.  It was a marriage based on faith, love, devotion, and gratitude.  Their relationship was emulated and admired by friends and family.

Madeline is survived by her husband Walter, daughter Kathleen Huchro Tubbs (Bruce), son Michael Huchro, granddaughters Meagan and Carly Tubbs.  Madeline also leaves behind her sister Helene Dennis (Ralph) and nephew Phil Dennis.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 26 from 6:00- 7:30 pm at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 27 at 11:00 am at St. Philip Neri Church in Westport, NY. Burial will be in the Parish cemetery.

The family also wishes to extend a thank you to for following people who comforted Madeline over the past few months.  Ofa Vaiciulis, Sandy Viens, Josette Cellotti, Carrie Hunsdon, Kayla Gross, High Peaks Hospice, and Elderwood Rehabilitation.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Madeline’s name to St. Phillip Neri Church, Westport, NY.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
