Joseph Gilbo Obituary

Joseph Henry Gilbo, 84 of Port Henry, NY died December 1, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on April 27, 1937 in Port Henry, NY son of the late Stanley and Jospehine (Hill) Gilbo.
Joseph married Mary McNulty on June 27, 1959. They were married for 62 years and had eight children.
Joseph graduated from Port Henry High School in 1955 then attended Manlius Preparatory School followed by Springfield College where he excelled at football and baseball.
While playing quarterback at Springfield College, he earned the nickname The Springfield Rifle and while playing catcher for the baseball team won a national championship.
He began his teaching career at Port Henry High School followed by Moriah Central School where he was the athletic director, coach, and teacher for 36 years.
Joseph was an avid Moriah Viking fan. There was nothing more he enjoyed than watching his grandchildren play for his beloved Vikings.
Joseph was predeceased by his beloved daughter Jennifer Ann, his parents Stanley and Josephine Gilbo, and in laws James and Lucille McNulty. Siblings include Dorothy (Gerald) Shpur, Sonny (Bette) Gilbo, Walter (Mary) Gilbo, Jane (Rufus) Hanchett, Oakley (Betty) Gilbo, Richard (Florence) Gilbo, Theresa (Robert) Baker, and Judith (Ben) Snow.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary McNulty Gilbo, and children Kathleen (Denis) O’Rourke, Stacey DeAvila, Peter (Rebecca) Gilbo, Lisa (Stephan) Pelkey, Amy (Phillip) Smith, Beth (Edmund) Trombley, and Megan (Brendan) Smith. Grandchildren include Erin O’Rourke, Nathan Gilbo (Marissa), Nicholas (Dana) Gilbo, Noah Gilbo, Lauren Pelkey (William),
Caitlin Pelkey (Casey), Matthew Pelkey, Joseph Pelkey, Luke Smith, Jacob Smith, Julia Smith, Dylan Trombley, Brendan Smith, and Gabriella Smith. Two great grandchildren Lucille and William, sister-in-law Ann Mcnulty Brewster and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Sunday December 5, 2021 from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Harland Funeral Home Port Henry, NY. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Port Henry, NY Monday December 6, 2021 at 11:00 am.
Donations in Joseph’s memory may be made to the Moriah Ambulance Squad.
