John F. Waldron “Jack”

Our beloved husband, Father, Papa and great Papa peacefully departed this world at the age of 93 on August 2, 2024 .

John was born in Port Henry, New York on September 21, 1930 to Milford and Marion (Grant) Waldron.

Answering a call from his community, Jack joined the L.F. Sprague Hose Company, now known as Port Henry Fire Department.

After Graduation in 1951, he joined the Navy and served as a Petty Officer second class.

He returned home in 1955 and was gainfully employed by Currier Motors, Port Henry Oil Corporation, and International Paper Company.

He was able to combine his love of the fire service by converting it into a professional career on January 1969. He joined the department of defense Plattsburgh Air Force Base as a firefighter. In 1970 he was quickly promoted to Station Chief. In 1972 he was again promoted to Assistant Chief of operations (crash & structural) and served in this role for a period of five years in 1977. He was appointed assistant chief of technical services (Fire Prevention & Investigation). During his tenure, he also acted as fire chief during any absences of the Base Chief on March 1, 1989. He retired from the Plattsburgh Air Force Base with over 20 proud years of service.

He married the love of his life, Margaret Callahan on April 25, 1959. Together, they built a beautiful and busy life in Port Henry where they raised four children, Tammy, Toni , John, Jim.

Jack was devoted to his community serving almost 76 years in the Port Henry fire department as 1st Assistant Chief for 19 years. A result of his efforts, dedication and knowledge, he was elected Fire Chief in April 1991 and held that position until April 2004. He also fulfilled the role of Safety Officer.

He was a life member of Port Henry Fire Department, Port Henry Council #384 Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars Mineville Post #5802 and the American Legion Post #14 of Vergennes, Vermont.

He was an active member of the community to other organizations and was respected. His kindness, generosity, and love for his family and friends will be remembered by all.

In his spare time, John loved camping with the family, traveling and working on projects in the home.

John was pre-deceased in death by his mother, father, sister, Marilyn Potter, brother, Richard Waldron and son-in-law Robert Mowery.

John is survived by his wife, Margaret and children, Tammy (Francis) Kelly of Magnolia, Delaware, Toni Mowery of Elizabethtown, New York, John (Tammy) Waldron of Port Henry, New York and James (Angelina) Waldron of Plattsburgh, New York.

Grandchildren-Ashley (Christopher) Olcott of Magnolia, Delaware, Cody (Evgeniya “Jane”) Olcott of Milford, Delaware, Kayla (Bruce) Parker of Dover, Delaware, Austin (Britney) Kelly of Seaford, Delaware, Joshua (Elizabeth) Mowery of Elizabethtown, New York, Cortland Mowery of Ohio, Hunter (Fiancé, Michelle) Mowery of California, Courtney (Nicholas) Marcotte of Morrisonville, New York, Derek (Amanda) Waldron of Milford, New Hampshire, Hayley (Jesse) LaRose of Fort Drum, New York, Evan Waldron of Plattsburgh, New York.

Great Grandchildren- Carley Mae Yeager, Cody, Noah “Bubba”, Sophia ”Fifi”, Owen Parker, Chloe Kelly, Sawyer Mowery, Jack & Nora Marcotte, Adalyn & Colton Larose, Rowan Waldron. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on August 29, 2024 at Harland funeral home in Port Henry, New York from 5:00 - 7:00PM.

Mass will be held on August 30,2024 at 11:00AM at St. Patrick’s Church in Port Henry, New York. Burial will be at a later date.

Celebration of Jack’s life will follow immediately after mass at the Knights of Columbus, 4253 Main Street, Port Henry, New York.

Donations may be made to the Port Henry Fire Department in Memory of Jack.
