John A. Grant

John A. Grant of Moriah, NY passed away August 11th, 2020 after a long illness.

He was born August 14, 1942 in Moriah, NY, the son of John F. and Elizabeth (Gergley) Grant.

He was a very proud member of the United States Air Force for 4 years and upon his honorable discharge returned to his hometown of Port Henry to be a devoted son to his mother and took employment at the International Paper Co. in Ticonderoga, NY, where he worked for 38 years. There was a flag displayed in his yard and even his wardrobe contained much red, white and blue.

John was a gregarious man who loved his many friends and regaling them with his vast knowledge of people and local history. He was also a man with a sense of humor. Even as a child he was a jokester when he played a joke on his parents. It seems he crept into their bedroom while they were sleeping. Each kept their false teeth in a glass by their bed. He thought it would be great fun to switch the glasses and wait until they woke up to find their teeth no longer fit.

While stationed in Alaskan Air Command he was a member of a select choral group called the Arctic Knights. Still loving to sing, when he returned home he joined a barbershop chorus. Well known for his civic activities, he joined the Moriah Fire Department as a volunteer, was on the Moriah Central School Board for 10 ½  years as well as serving on the board at Interlakes Hospital in Ticonderoga. And who can forget his EMCEE abilities at parades and the Junior Miss pageant. He never said “no” when asked to help out. You could always count on John for an entertaining time.

John led a full and active life of service and will be remembered by the many friends he left behind who like to think he has joined another choral group and is at peace.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 17, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. Patrick’s Church in Port Henry. Arrangements are with the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry, NY.
