George R. Harrington

George R. Harrington, 89, husband of the late Elizabeth (Thwaits) Harrington, went home to the loving arms of our lord after a brief but brave battle on May 5, 2021. 

Born January 14, 1932 in Moriah Center, N.Y., he was the son of the late George and Eloise (Davis) Harrington. 

George attended Mineville High School and graduated in 1949. Following high school, George attended Albany Business College and graduated in 1951. George found employment at the local bank and worked there for over 30 years. 

In 1950 George met Elizabeth (Betty) Thwaits on the banks of the Ausable River. George married Betty, the love of his life on March 24, 1951 in Jay, N.Y. George and Betty had four children together and were married for 54 years. 

In 1963, George joined the Moriah Fire Department. He was a member for 58 years. George served as the district Fire Treasurer since 1973. In addition, George was the Caption for the Fire Police. George was also given the honor of being Firefighter of the year in 2017. 

George enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, reading, serving his community as a member of the Moriah Fire Department, and spending time with his beloved cat Bella. In their younger days, George and Betty, along with their three younger children, enjoyed going to social gatherings for square dancing. George’s faith was incredibly important to him and he was a long-time member of the Moriah Methodist Church. 

George was predeceased by his loving wife Betty, his mother Eloise, his father George, his step-mother Coyla, his sister Alice Hyatt, his daughter in law Deborah (John) Harrington, his grandson Matthew Case Lukins, and many sister and brothers in laws. 

George was survived by his children John Harrington, William (Julie) Harrington, Michael (Xochi) Harrington, Tine (Steve) Gilbert, 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. 

The family of George Harrington would like to thank the staff at Elizabethtown Community Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care during the last days of his life. 

A graveside service will be held on July 24, 2021 at 11 am at the Union Cemetery in Port Henry, NY. There will be no wake per George’s wishes.
