Obituary of Charles J. Turek

Charles J. Turek, Jr., 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6th, 2025 at CVPH surrounded by his loving family.

 Born September 5th, 1942 in Port Henry, New York. Charlie was the son of Charles J Turek, Sr. and Rose (Flint) Turek.  Charlie graduated from Mineville High School in 1960, where he was a proud member of the football,basketball and baseball teams. He went on to attend Castleton College playing soccer and baseball before earning his Master of Science degree from Ithaca College in 1972.  Charlie dedicated his career to education and public service. He taught physical education, health, driver’s education and coached in several schools and St. Francis College, spending the last 13 years of his teaching career at Moriah Central School. In addition, he served as the Director of the Essex County Youth bureau for several years.  A proud Mason and member of the Rescue Lodge #0772. Charlie also devoted decades to public service as Town Justice in Moriah for 8 years and then he and his family moved to Westport where he became the Town Justice there for 30 years. He was a long time member of the New York Essex County Magistrates Association and the Presbyterian Church.  Charlie was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and loved attending games whenever he could.

 More than anything Charlie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather - lovingly known as “Papa” not only to his grandchildren but to their friends as well. He cherished every opportunity to support them at their sporting events and any other school activities. 

Left to cherish his memory is the love of his life, wife of 59 years, Anne (Leslie) Turek, his children, Allison (Turek) Whalen of Westport  and Jonathan (Kristen) Turek of Chazy; his adored grandchildren: Spenser and Sophia Whalen, Eric (Lauren) Turek, Kassidy Turek, Peyton Turek. Also left to cherish his memory are his sister Cheryl Scozzafaza; nieces Christine (Jamie) Wilson and Carrie (Michael) Langey. and Great nieces and nephews, Sydney and Samuel Langey and Kyle Wilson; along with many cousins and dear friends.

Charlie was preceded by his parents Charles Sr. and Rose Turek, his Brother-in law, James Scozzafava and Son-in-law, Christopher Whalen who he held dearly in his heart.

 In accordance with Charlie's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 14th 2025 at 2:00 pm at Moriah Union Cemetery in Port Henry, New York.

 Dad/Papa will be missed by all who knew him, but he will forever live on inside of our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or the Westport Rescue Squad and Fire District.
