Charles (Charlie) Harrington, age 80, passed away peacefully following a brief illness at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT, surrounded by his loving family. Charlie was born the second youngest of seven children on May 24th, 1945 and grew up in Shaftsbury, VT. Charlie was raised by two hardworking parents who valued growing and raising their own food via their small family farm. Charlie carried these ideals throughout his life. Following graduation from Keene State College, he became a special education teacher for many years. While working at Silver Towers Camp, Charlie met his wife Candyce (Candy) and together they raised two children (Owen and Elisha) in Crown Point, NY. Charlie eventually left education to open, with Candy, Harrington’s Greenhouse, a Crown Point staple until 1997 when Charlie went back to teaching at Crown Point Central School as a special education teacher. Eventually he retired from teaching entirely and became the Town Supervisor for Crown Point. Charlie loved this job and thrived in representing his town. He retired from this position on January 1st of this year, and greatly looked forward to fully investing himself into his true love of gardening and jam making. Charlie was a master gardener and loved growing his own fruits and vegetables. If Charlie shared his bounty with you, you knew you were loved. His canned tomatoes will be missed! Following the passing of his beloved wife, Charlie found kinship and a creative outlet in the local storytelling community, where he regaled the crowd with stories of growing up in rural vermont, and his early years of teaching. Besides gardening, jam making, and storytelling, Charlie was a wonderful grandfather (Grandpa) who loved spending time with his grandchildren and his family at large. His grandchildren will miss gardening and enjoying the outdoors with their Grandpa.
Charlie was predeceased by his sisters Jean Mattison, Mildred Harris, Donna Taft, Mary Palmer, and his brother Milton Harrington. Charlie is survived by his sister Flossie Nolan, daughter Elisha Harrington, son Owen Harrington, daughter in law Jessica Harrington, and his grandchildren Brayden, Camden, and Annabelle Harrington as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Services for Charlie will be held on February 28th at 11:00am at the Congregational Church in Crown Point, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Lodge in Burlington, Vermont.
