Bernice V. Urban, 89, a resident of Mineville, passed away on Monday, October 4 at the Elderwood Nursing Home with her family by her side. She was born on June 27, 1932 in Westport, the daughter of the late Elbert and Julia (Swan) Howard.
Bernice enjoyed spending time with family sharing a meal, watching football or playing cards. She especially loved her great-grandchildren and pets. Her greatest joy was hanging out with her greatgranddaughter, Sadie, simply reading. She was a talented seamstress. She also crocheted beautiful afghans and doilies.
Over the years she worked as a home health aide and most recently, at Walmart, where she made some close friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her son John “Butch” Urban of Port Henry, her son-in-law John Allen of Mineville and her infant grandson Scott Thomas Whitman.
Survivors include her children: Phyllis Allen of Mineville; Jennie “Jean” Fox (Dale) of Ticonderoga; Paul Urban (Debra) of Las Vegas, NV; Steve Urban (Anne) of South Glens Falls. Bernice is also survived by her grandchildren: Kelly Reynolds (Chris) of Indiana; John Allen, Jr. (Shannon) of Vergennes, VT; Carl Urban (Nicole) of Michigan; Tommy Allen (Cassandra) of Granville; Thomas Whitman, Jr. (Aimee) of Argyle; Jason Allen (Lisa) of Wind Gap, PA; Tony Allen of Allentown, PA; Chris Whitman (Meagan) of Mineville. In addition, she had many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 12 at 11AM at St. Patrick’s Church in Port Henry.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Essex County SPCA.
