George Evens Sr. Obituary

It is with great sadness and immeasurable love for their beloved husband and father, that the family of George Arthur Evens Sr. announces his passing on Saturday, September 1st, 2018 at the age of 70 years old. The world has lost a great man.

George is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sally (Fleming), his son George Jr. and wife Tamara, his daughter Marcy and husband Damon Eichen, and his daughter Samantha and husband Jerald Frasier. George will also be missed dearly by his seven grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Jillian, Madelyn, George III, Abigail, Gunner and Jacob.; his sister Marjorie Eaton of Rutland, VT, sister Joan Czarnecki of Castleton, Vt, brother John Evens (Darlene Budwick) of Port Henry, NY, sister Ann (Howard) Dushane of Crown Point, NY, brother Thomas (Donna) Evens of Moriah, NY, and brother Lawrence (Doris) Evens of Moriah. George was born the seventh of ten children on November 15, 1947 in Gansevoort, NY. Soon thereafter, his family moved to Port Henry, NY to pursue the difficult task of running a dairy farm. In 1970, George started working at NL Industries in Tahawus, NY. George would often recall his time working on the railroad at the mine with great fondness. Due to the mine closing, George continued to work various other jobs, including running a local garbage route every Saturday, to provide for his family. He ultimately started working for BF Goodrich in Vergennes, VT, formerly Simmonds Precision. Working at Goodrich allowed him to work alongside his wife for 25 years until they both retired in 2010.

George’s number one priority in life was to take care of and be involved with his family. He loved nothing more than spending holidays with the ones he loved; presents overflowing in the living room at Christmas, Easter egg hunts with the kids, scaring trick-or-treaters at Halloween. Every vacation taken, George would rally to include all his children as emphatically as possible. He was an excellent horseshoe player; winning many tournaments in his younger years. As he got older, he thoroughly enjoyed trips to casinos and playing in a weekly card tournament. George was also a faithful NY Yankees fan.

George is predeceased by his parents, Wyona (Hendrix) and Ralph Evens Sr., his son Timothy Allen Evens, and three brothers, Ralph Evens Jr., Gerald Evens and Earl Evens.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018 from 6-8 PM at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Moriah Methodist Church in Moriah followed immediately by a reception honoring George’s life at the K of C in Port Henry.
