Pasquel J. Tom (August 6, 1933 - January 5, 2018)

Pasquel J. “Pat” Tom, retired Postmaster and life-long resident of Port Henry, where he was a highly respected member of the community, passed away Friday at his home.  A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was 84.

Born at his parents’ home on Elizabeth Street, he was one of ten children of Louis (Adamo) and Christine (Esposito) Tom.  Pat was a proud first-generation Italian-American, graduate of Port Henry High School, and veteran of the US Army.  On August 16, 1958, he married Josephine “Josie” Calabrese at St. Michael’s Church in Witherbee.  They settled on Jackson Street in Port Henry where they raised their six children.

Pat worked for the US Postal Service for 34 years from 1956 to 1990, mainly in Port Henry but also in Lake Placid in 1979-80 during the XIII Winter Olympics, which he considered one of the highlights of his career.  He made and maintained many friendships through his work and favorite sport, golf.  Pat was known for his golfing talents at the Town of Moriah Country Club, Westport Country Club, and other courses in the Adirondacks.  He was the Moriah Country Club champion nine times from 1963 to 1973 and held the course record for the lowest score for a long period of time.

In addition to his work and family, Pat made time to serve on the Moriah Central School Board of Education, and then in retirement on the Village of Port Henry Board.  Also in retirement, he enjoyed working in the Westport Country Club pro shop for several years and at the Crown Point State Historic Site Visitors’ Center adjacent to the Lake Champlain Bridge, and he enthusiastically attended his grandchildren’s many athletic and social events.

Pat is survived by his wife Josie of Port Henry, and their three sons and three daughters:  Paul Adamo and wife, Ann, of Oneonta, Nicholas Tom and wife, Tammy, of Norwich, Vincent Tom and wife, Beth, of Keene, NH, Patti Wolf and husband, Robert, of Crown Point, Valerie Adamo Bradley and husband, Steven, of Sherburne, and Nancy Matson and husband, Jonathan, of Waterford; eleven grandchildren and four great-children.  He is also survived by one sister, Mary Harris of Port Henry, and one brother, Samuel Tom of Fairchance, PA.

Friends and family are invited to the calling hours at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on January 8.  A funeral mass with the Rev. Albert Hauser presiding will take place at 10:00 am on January 9 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, where Pat was baptized and then worshipped throughout his life.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to High Peaks Hospice and Palliative Care, P.O. Box 840, Saranac Lake, NY 12983 through charitable gifts in memory of Pat.
